In Search of Tomorrow (2022)

Title: In Search of Tomorrow

Director: David A. Weiner

Runtime: 5 hours 1 minute

IMDB synopsis: A nostalgic journey through ’80s sci-fi films, exploring their impact and relevance today, told by the artists who made them and by those who were inspired to turn their visions into reality.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

What David A. Weiner has done for the horror genre of the 1980s (In Search of Darkness (ISOD), In Search of Darkness: Part II, and the upcoming In Search of Darkness: Part III) he now does for the sci-fi genre of the 1980s.

Curiosity, intrigue, and a heavy dose of nostalgia. You will experience each of these feelings, sometimes all of them at once, while watching In Search of Tomorrow (ISOT).

Arguably the best aspect of ISOT is the fact that there is something for everyone. Are you a casual sci-fi fan? An avid sci-fi junkie? Maybe you are somewhere in the middle and want to know more about sci-fi from the decade that gave us Back to the Future, Aliens, and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial? Regardless of which category you fall into, ISOT more than gives you what you are looking for.

If you have seen either ISOD installment, you know what to expect. This is not just 5 hours of gushing over ’80s sci-fi blockbusters (which also would have been an enjoyable watch). Before you hit play, be sure to have pen and paper nearby or the “Notes” app open on your phone. You will see films mentioned that pique your interest enough to want to seek them out and add them to your Letterboxd watchlist.

But, it is not just about finding films to watch. Starting in 1980 and progress through the decade, we get to hear from the stars and crew members of the films being discussed. They share their experiences, what they loved about the film, what went into making it, etc.. Personally, my favorite aspect was gaining insight into how certain films wound up inspiring later sci-fi films and franchises.

An absolute must watch for any and all sci-fi fans. Grab some friends, grab some snacks, and go forth, In Search of Tomorrow.
