What better way to start a Wednesday than with Netflix giving us a first look at Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio?

Now you may be wondering, isn’t there already a new Pinocchio movie coming out this year? And, well, yes, you are correct. But the one you are thinking of is the Disney+ Pinocchio movie. And as we can tell from the IMDb synopsis for this Pinocchio movie, “A darker version of the classic children’s fairy tale of a wooden puppet that transforms into a real living boy.”, there may be a whole new meaning given to “I’ve Got No Strings”.

But enough talking about it, let’s watch the teaser trailer…

Official teaser trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio

Truth be told, I was sold on this as soon as I heard Guillermo del Toro was attached to it. I love the passion he has for his work and the way he is able to tell a story and take you on a journey. Add to that that this will be stop motion and they’ve got me in the palm of their hands before I even see a trailer.

Now that we have seen the trailer, I am even more onboard with Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio. We open with Sebastian J. Cricket (voiced by Ewan McGregor) telling us that he has a lot to say after his many travels. About imperfect fathers, imperfect sons, loss, and love. Right away the tone has been set and we know the themes that will be explored.

We see Geppetto (voiced by David Bradley) at his son’s grave tending to the headstone. From there we see him chopping down a tree and out of that tree creating what will become the wooden boy. As we are watching Geppetto, Sebastian J. Cricket tells us that while this may seem like a story that we know…it is one that we truly do not.

In addition to McGregor and Bradley, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio also includes Cate Blanchett, Finn Wolfhard, Tilda Swinton, Christoph Waltz, Ron Perlman, John Turturro, and Burn Gorman.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio will be released in select theaters and on Netflix this December.

So, what did you think of the trailer? Are you looking forward to December? Let me know in the comments below or on social media!
